LNG shipping

Sovcomflot has been an independent owner and operator of LNG carriers since 2006.

SCF was the first Russian company to establish itself in LNG shipping market and started operating LNG carriers, a type of vessel technically more complex and demanding than conventional oil tankers.

In a short time, the company has developed a strong expertise in LNG shipping that is unique for Russia and is highly demanded by the market. The availability of such competencies has played and continues to play an important role in the implementation of large-scale LNG projects in the Arctic and the Russian Far East.

SCF specialises in LNG transportation within harsh environments. SCF played a big part in the introduction of a fundamentally new type of vessel, an icebreaking LNG carrier (Yamalmax) designed for year-round navigation in the Arctic. In 2017, SCF began operating the first ever such carrier, Christophe de Margerie, for the Yamal LNG project.

Currently, the construction of a new generation of icebreaking LNG carriers with improved characteristics has been ordered by SCF for the Arctic LNG-2 project.
