Farkhutdinov, Igor

Igor Farkhutdinov (1950-2003) was the Governor of the Sakhalin Region from 1995 to 2003.

In 1972, he graduated from the Krasnoyarsk Polytechnical Institute as an engineer/economist. After graduating and up until 1977, Farkhutdinov worked as an engineer, shift leader and shop supervisor at the Titovsky Power Station (Sakhalin Region). From 1977 to 1985, he was involved in political activities for Komsomol (All-Union Leninist Young Communist League). From 1985 to 1995, Farkhutdinov was the Mayor of the town of Nevelsk, then the Chairman of the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk City Executive Committee and the Mayor of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. In April 1995, he was appointed Chief of Administration of the Sakhalin Region. In 1996 and 2000, Igor Farkhutdinov achieved a landslide victory at the gubernatorial elections.

He was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honour, the IV Degree Order of Merit for Country and the II Degree Order of Holy Prince Daniel of Moscow from the Russian Orthodox Church.

An Aframax crude oil tanker is named after Igor Farkhutdinov.
